A drama of passion, love and treason, the 1851 opera Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi, based on Victor Hugo’s five act play Le Roi s'Amuse and with a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, is one of the masterpieces of the composer’s mid to late period. The Opéra Bastille is offering a production of the three act melodrama in Italian, featuring Željko Lučić in the titular role and Vittorio Grigolo as the Duke of Mantua. The story of the Duke, his beautiful daughter, a court jester, a seduction, a curse and tragedy is a profound and powerful one.
